Today:Partly cloudy. A 20 % chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the mid 90s. Southeast winds 10 to 15 mph. Heat index readings 100 to 104.
Tonight: Mostly clear. Lows in the lower 70s. East winds 5 to 10 mph.
Isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop along coastal areas late this morning and move into inland areas this afternoon and evening. Movement will be towards the north at 10 mph or less. Gusty winds and heavy downpours will accompany some of the stronger storms.
Widespread highs in the mid 90s this afternoon will push heat index into the 100 to 105 degree range for extended periods. Use extra caution while outside today.
Forecast Details: Large middle level high pressure ridge just east of the forecast area will slowly build northwest and settle over the southeastern US through the short term period. Precipitation water amounts currently around 1.75" today will fall to 1.5" or less on Wednesday/Thursday. This will allow for a slight chance of showers/thunderstorms today with rain chances around 20% while probability of precipitation will fall to around 10% or less on Wednesday/Thursday as the dry air and subsidence from the ridge takes over.
The main story in the short term period will be the heat with daytime maximum temperatures in the middle/upper 90s over inland areas with lower 90s at the beaches. Heat index will top out around 105 degrees each afternoon. Still below local heat advisory criteria of 110 degrees but will need to be highlighted in the hazard weather outlook.
