Today's WX Outlook...

...STRONG THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE TODAY...

...HEAT INDICES BETWEEN 102 AND 107 TODAY...

Today: Partly cloudy with chance of showers and thunderstorms in the morning, then mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely in the afternoon. Highs in the mid 90s. Southwest winds 5 mph. Chance of rain 70 %. Heat index readings 103 to 107.

Tonight: Partly cloudy with a 30 % chance of showers and thunderstorms. Patchy fog after midnight. Lows in the lower 70s. South winds 5 mph in the evening becoming light.

Numerous thunderstorms are forecast today. The stronger storms will be capable of wind gusts in excess of 50 mph, torrential downpours with localized flooding and frequent lightning.

Heat index readings will top out between 101 and 107 today. If you plan to be outside, avoid prolonged exposure or strenuous physical activity. drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Forecast Details: high pressure ridge over the Gulf of Mexico extends eastward across north/central Florida. Middle level shortwave trough is bearing down on southeast Georgia early this morning. Active convection along the leading edge has persisted overnight and will likely enter our northwest zones by sunrise. Water vapor loop shows large area of subsidence behind the shortwave over northern Alabama and Georgia. Dew points are quite juicy, in the middle 70s and precipitable waters are forecast to be around 2.3 inches today.

Aforementioned shortwave will drop south into the local area and will trigger numerous showers and thunderstorms across today. Have kept likely probability of precipitation (60-70%) for much of area, lowering to 40% in far southeast portion. With upper level support, some of the storms could be strong. Maximum temperatures in the low/middle 90s will combine with dew points in the middle/upper 70s to push heat index into the 101-105 degree range.

Shortwave vorticity axis will push toward northeast Florida this evening. GFS shows drier air spilling into the northern tier but NAM shows lingering vorticity in southeast Georgia. Will keep 20-30% probability of precipitation tonight.
