We hope you and your 2- and 4-legged friends and family had a wonderful 2010.

The New Year is the time for resolutions and turning over a new leaf.  We've got a few ideas for resolutions that will help the homeless animals in your community:

1.  GET MORE INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY:  Volunteering at your local Shelter or with a rescue group helps more dogs and cats find forever homes.  We are always looking for dedicated volunteers at the Shelter.  Our next orientation is Saturday, January 8th from 9:30-11:30, please come join us!

2.  DONATE TO A GOOD CAUSE:  We are always in need of supplies to make the animals happier and more comfortable.  Towels, blankets, treats, wet dog and cat food, toys, shampoo, etc. are always appreciated.  Kuranda beds are a great way to make the dogs more comfortable.  http://kuranda.com/donate/3360/

3.  OPEN YOUR HEART (AND HOME) TO THE LESS FORTUNATE:  Rescue groups are critical for reducing the number of euthanasias in Alachua County.  They are limited in the number of animals they can take from ACAS by a lack of foster homes.  Consider fostering a dog or cat for a local rescue group so they can rescue more animals from the Shelter.

4.  BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION:  There are simply more homeless animals than there are homes available.  Spaying and neutering your pets prevents unwanted litters of puppies and kittens.  There are free and low-cost programs available in Alachua County:
-Operation Petsnip:  Cats $40/Dogs $60
  (www.nmhp.net. Call for appt.  352-376-6647)
-Operation Pitnip:  free spaying/neutering for pitbulls/pitbull mixes (West End Animal Hospital 352-472-5471)

Adopting a pet rather than buying from a pet store (which are supplied by puppy mills) or from a breeder also helps alleviate the problem.  There are so many homeless animals that you will definitely be able to find one that fits into your household.

We are so grateful for all the great adoptions and support in 2010.  Here's hoping 2011 will result in more great adoptions and fewer animals ending up at the Shelter.  You can also see adoptable dogs at petharbor.com orwww.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelterid=FL164

Happy New Year!
