It seems every few years since the York Commission report came out recommending consolidation of the Alachua County Sheriffs Office and Gainesvville Police Department this debate comes around.

The City of Gainesville and it's Mayor and Commission have recently come down against this proposal.

The North-Central Florida Chapter of the Florida Police Benevolent Association (a police union that has represented Alachua County Sheriff's deputies) has submitted to the Alachua County Legislative Delegation a proposed bill that mandates a study commission to develop a plan that eliminates the Gainesville Police Department and places the law enforcement services and related assets of Gainesville under the direction of the Alachua County Sheriff. The Alachua County Legislative Delegation will meet about the proposed action on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011.
