Diabetes affects nearly 26-million Americans.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates just over eight percent of the entire population suffers from symptoms related to the body's ability to produce or regulate insulin.
In its 2010 report on diabetes, the CDC said more than one-quarter of U.S. residents aged 65 and older had the disease.
Another 7-million Americans had some form of diabetes but were undiagnosed.
Experts at the CDC say early detection and proper treatment can help manage the condition and lower the risk of life-threatening complications.
