Betty Strayer of Meridian Behavioral Healthcare will speak tonight on the basics of the Baker Act, which allows someone to be temporarily detained for mental health evaluation and treatment when required, either on a voluntary or an involuntary basis.

Strayer is the official instructor on the Baker Act for law enforcement training in Alachua County. She will speak at 7 p.m. at United Church of Gainesville, 1624 N.W. Fifth Ave.

The meeting is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Gainesville affiliate. It is open to the public.
