Benjamin Franklin deduced that wind rotates counterclockwise around a storm system on this date in 1743 after clouds blocked his view of a lunar eclipse in Philadelphia. After learning that his brother in Boston was able to view the eclipse, he theorized that the storm system seemed to move southwest to northeast, even though the winds at his location were from the northeast.
