From June 4-June 18, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and Gainesville Police Department will be collecting new and gently used children’s books to encourage young people to read during the summer while school is not in session.
“Experience tells us that children who read are interested in learning and children who are serious about learning make good decisions,” said Sheriff Sadie Darnell. “Children who make good decisions become adults who make good decisions, and people who make good decisions generally don’t wind up in jail or prison.”
Gainesville Police Department Chief Tony Jones said he pledged his agency’s support because he, too, knows the value of reading.
“I am an advocate for programs that encourage and promote educational opportunities,” Jones said. “Reading is fundamental in all aspects of learning.”
ASO and GPD are working with various community youth groups to promote literacy and learning while young people are enjoying summertime fun. Books will be accepted for children of all ages.
Books may be dropped off during normal business hours at the Alachua County Jail, 3333 NE 39th Avenue; Alachua County Sheriff’s Office administrative building (Human Resources lobby), 2621 SE Hawthorne Road; Gainesville Police Department, 721 NW 6th St. and the Gainesville Sun, 2700 SW 13th St.
