"May Day" is is as they say a target rich day in history, so here's my take on some of the better stuff so I don't get writers cramp...
- 1844- Samuel Morse sends 1st telegraphic message ( this made the computer possible).
- 1919- Mount Kelud (Indonesia) erupts, killing 5,000 people in 104 small villages.
- 1928- Pitcairn Airlines (later Eastern) begins service.
- 1941- General Mills introduces Cheerios.
- 1961- Tanganyika granted full internal self-government by Britain.
- 1961- 1st U.S. airplane hijacked to Cuba.
- 1961- Fidel Castro announces there will be no more elections in Cuba.
- 1964- 1st BASIC program runs on a computer (Dartmouth) (my first computer language).
- 1971- Amtrak Railroad begins operation.
- 1979- Home rule introduced to Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland).
- 1979- Marshall Islands (in Pacific) become self-governing.
- 1981- Radio Shack releases Model III TRSDOS 1.3 (my first computer)
- 1989- U.S. Supreme Court rules employees have legal burden to prove non-discriminatory reasons for not hiring or promoting.
- 1999- 125th Kentucky Derby.
- 2003- President George W. Bush declares that 'major combat operations' in Iraq are over. (still there).
