In the Sunshine State on this day in 1565 Pedro Menendez de Aviles and the men of his armada make preparations for formally establishing St. Augustine. The site, which would be officially dedicated on September 8, would ultimately become the first permanent European settlement in North America.
In 1920 Mrs. C. Herbert Purdy became the first Jacksonville woman to register to vote under the provisions of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution.
