9/11 events planned this week
Several events are scheduled related to the ninth anniversary of the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Some of those events are in response to the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn the Quran on Saturday.
Today
Noon — Interfaith Prayer Service for Unity, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 100 N.E. First St., downtown Gainesville
Friday
6-9 p.m. — Gathering for Peace, Understanding and Hope, an interfaith event at Trinity United Methodist Church, 4000 N.W. 53rd Ave.
Saturday
8:30-10:30 a.m — Prayer and Remembrance for Sept. 11 Victims, Trinity United Methodist Chapel, 4000 N.W. 53rd Ave., to honor the memory of those who perished on Sept. 11, 2001, and pray for their families. Also will light candles and pray for all those who have been placed in harm's way since that day.
5-7 p.m. — Day for Peace and Unity, the Gainesville Muslim Initiative will be serving food to the homeless with the local Project Downtown at Bo Diddley Plaza, downtown Gainesville. Volunteers from the Shifa Mercy Clinic will be performing blood pressure checks. A blood drive for 60 donors is planned in association with LifeSouth. Also a book drive and a food drive of non-perishable food. There will also be a distribution of toiletry bags to the homeless.
7-8 p.m. — Public statements of support. Bo Diddley Plaza, downtown.
8 p.m. — Candlelight vigil for peace, unity and tolerance and to honor the memory of the victims of Sept. 11. One minute of silence. Bo Diddley Plaza.
