In the Sunshine State on this day in 1763 Colonel Augustine Prevost of the British Army accepted possession of West Florida from the Spanish at Pensacola.

In 1840 Dr. Henry Perrine, an amateur botanist and resident of Indian Key, was killed by Seminoles. His family were hiding in a root cellar under the house, and, although the house was set afire by the Indians, survived the attack. At dawn, they left their hiding place and managed to put to sea in a small boat. They were rescued by a schooner anchored close by. A neighbor, Jacob Housman, also survived the attack.

In 1868 Present State Seal of Florida authorized.
