On this day in 1539 Hernando de Soto inaugurates postal service in Florida when he writes a letter to the Cabildo of Santiago de Cuba from Espiritu Santo (Tampa Bay). In 1888 the Town of Lake Helen incorporated. In 1957 the city of St. Petersburg Beach is created when the municipalities of Pass-A-Grille [1911], Don Cesar [1950], and Belle Vista Beach [1949] were consolidated with St. Petersburg Beach [1943].
